Major Pettigrew's Last Stand - Helen Simonson

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson

Major Ernest Pettigrew has lost his wife a couple of years ago, and in the beginning of the story he has just been told his brother has died.  Mrs. Ali, the village shopkeeper, helps him and this is the beginning of a friendship. Both have lost their spouses, both love literature and a nice cup of tea, and both are lonely. It is a lovely story about love in old age, sharp and witty told. It is also about honor, courage, and the relation to family and the surrounding community. The Major is old school - Mrs. Ali of Pakistani origin. If you liked :" A Man Called  Ove" or "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry", this book will be a hit. I enjoyed it tremendously.
